Oklahoma City confirm Holmgren injury
The Oklahoma City Thunder have confirmed that Chet Holmgren is expected to miss eight to ten weeks after receiving treatment for a small tear in his right patellar tendon.
Holmgren experienced discomfort in his right knee on 25 October. Following specialist consultations, the Thunder announced on 30 October that he had undergone successful biological treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
The eight-to-ten-week estimate suggests a possible return in late December 2026 or early January 2027, although no specific return date has been confirmed.
Thunder facing a growing injury crisis
Holmgren's absence adds to an increasingly difficult situation for Oklahoma City, with Jalen Williams and Cason Wallace also sidelined by significant injuries.
Williams suffered a fractured left fibula and dislocated left ankle against the Los Angeles Clippers on 25 October, while Wallace sustained a torn labrum in his left shoulder.
The Thunder now face an extended period without three important members of their rotation, creating challenges for a team with championship ambitions.
What Holmgren's absence means for Oklahoma City
Holmgren is a vital part of Oklahoma City's defensive identity. His shot-blocking, length and ability to protect the rim provide an important foundation for the Thunder's system.
His ability to stretch the floor also creates space offensively, making him difficult to replace with a single player.
Isaiah Hartenstein could be asked to shoulder additional frontcourt responsibility, while the remaining rotation will need to compensate for Holmgren's absence on both ends of the court.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander will also face increased pressure to keep Oklahoma City competitive through a challenging stretch.
When will Holmgren return?
The Thunder's official recovery estimate is eight to ten weeks following his treatment on 30 October.
That places a potential return between late December and early January, depending on his progress.
The team has not confirmed a specific return game, and any more precise timetable would be speculative.
