Ja Morant Suffers Major Injury Setback
The Portland Trail Blazers have confirmed that Ja Morant has sustained a Grade 2 left hamstring strain, ruling the two-time NBA All-Star out for an extended period just four games into his first season with the franchise.
Portland announced on Friday, October 30, that medical imaging revealed the injury and Morant will be re-evaluated in four weeks.
The four-week period is a medical reassessment date, rather than a guaranteed return to action.
Injury Against His Former Team
Morant suffered the injury during Thursday's 124-103 defeat to the Memphis Grizzlies, the organisation he represented for seven seasons before his summer trade to Portland.
The 27-year-old exited in the fourth quarter after experiencing discomfort in his left hamstring. He finished with 14 points, two rebounds and three assists in 23 minutes.
Portland head coach Micah Nori initially described Morant as having felt a twinge in his hamstring, with further medical evaluation planned after the game.
Subsequent imaging confirmed the Grade 2 strain.
A Frustrating Start to a New Chapter
Morant arrived in Portland following a June 2026 trade from Memphis, offering the Trail Blazers another established playmaker alongside Damian Lillard and their developing young core.
Through his first four appearances of the 2026-27 season, Morant averaged 15.8 points, 5.5 assists and 2.5 rebounds in approximately 26 minutes per game.
His injury interrupts an important adjustment period as Portland works to establish its backcourt combinations and offensive identity.
What Does a Grade 2 Hamstring Strain Mean?
A Grade 2 hamstring strain generally involves a partial tear of muscle fibres, making it more significant than a mild Grade 1 strain.
Recovery depends on the location and extent of the injury, treatment response and progress through rehabilitation.
Although Portland has set a four-week reassessment period, the team has not announced a definite return date. Morant could require additional recovery time before being cleared for competitive basketball.
Who Steps Up for Portland?
Morant's absence leaves the Trail Blazers without one of their primary ball-handlers and attacking guards.
Damian Lillard and Jrue Holiday could shoulder additional playmaking responsibilities, while Portland may need to adjust its guard rotation and offensive approach.
Deni Avdija could also take on a greater creative role as the team looks to maintain its early-season momentum.
For Portland, the immediate challenge is finding a sustainable rotation without placing unnecessary pressure on Morant's recovery.
When Will Ja Morant Return?
The Trail Blazers have confirmed that Morant will be re-evaluated approximately four weeks after the October 30 announcement.
There is currently no official date for his return to games.
Further updates will depend on his recovery and subsequent medical assessments.
