The Los Angeles Lakers are adding another legendary figure to Star Plaza.
The franchise has announced that former head coach Phil Jackson will be honored with a statue outside Crypto.com Arena, with the unveiling scheduled for April 9, 2027.
The ceremony will take place before the Lakers host the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Jackson will become the ninth figure associated with the Lakers to receive a statue at Star Plaza, joining some of the most celebrated names in franchise history.
Five Championships in Los Angeles
Jackson arrived in Los Angeles ahead of the 1999-2000 season having already built a remarkable coaching legacy with the Chicago Bulls.
It didn't take long for him to transform the Lakers.
With Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal leading the team on the court, Jackson guided Los Angeles to three consecutive NBA championships in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
The Lakers returned to the NBA Finals in 2004 before Jackson stepped away from the team.
His story in Los Angeles wasn't finished.
Jackson returned for a second spell in 2005 and eventually built another championship team around Bryant and Pau Gasol.
The Lakers reached three consecutive NBA Finals from 2008 to 2010, winning back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010.
Across his two spells with the franchise, Jackson took the Lakers to seven NBA Finals and won five championships.
A Lakers Coaching Record
Jackson coached 11 seasons with the Lakers and finished with a 610-292 regular-season record.
Those 610 victories remain the most by a head coach in Lakers history.
His postseason record in Los Angeles was equally remarkable.
Jackson went 118-63 in the playoffs and the Lakers reached the postseason in every season he coached the team.
Few coaches have been as closely connected to sustained championship success.
The Most Successful Championship Coach in NBA History
Jackson's Lakers achievements form only part of his extraordinary career.
Before arriving in Los Angeles, he coached Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the Chicago Bulls to six NBA championships during the 1990s.
Combined with his five Lakers titles, Jackson finished his coaching career with 11 NBA championships.
No head coach in NBA history has won more.
He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and was later selected as one of the 15 greatest coaches in NBA history as part of the league's 75th anniversary celebrations.
Joining Lakers Royalty
Jackson's statue will stand alongside some extraordinary company at Star Plaza.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elgin Baylor, Kobe Bryant, Chick Hearn, Magic Johnson, Shaquille O'Neal, Pat Riley and Jerry West have all previously been honored with statues outside the arena.
Jackson will now join them.
The statue will be designed and created by sculptor Omri Amrany of Rotblatt Amrany Studio.
For a coach who helped shape two separate Lakers championship eras, it is another permanent recognition of his place in the franchise's history.
On April 9, 2027, the coach responsible for five Lakers championships will officially take his place alongside the legends he helped create.
