The Los Angeles Lakers are adding more than two decades of Miami Heat experience to their front office.
Los Angeles is hiring Heat vice president of player personnel Eric Amsler as an assistant general manager, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
Amsler joins Rohan Ramadas as an assistant general manager under Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka.
The appointment completes another significant piece of the Lakers' front-office restructuring.
From Intern to Vice President
Amsler's route to one of the NBA's most prominent franchises has been a remarkable one.
He originally joined the Miami Heat as a basketball operations intern ahead of the 2004-05 season.
Rather than using the position as a brief entry into the league, Amsler spent more than two decades working his way through Miami's organisation.
His roles included scouting and information coordinator, scouting and player personnel coordinator, director of scouting operations, director of scouting and director of player personnel.
Amsler was eventually promoted to vice president of player personnel.
His responsibilities included overseeing Miami's scouting department and gathering information on potential prospects across the NBA Draft, professional basketball and the G League.
He also scouted players domestically and internationally.
Extensive G League Experience
Amsler's résumé extends beyond the Heat's NBA operation.
He also held senior positions with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, Miami's G League affiliate, eventually becoming the team's general manager.
That experience gave Amsler a role in identifying and developing players throughout Miami's wider basketball system.
It is particularly relevant for a Lakers organisation looking to strengthen its scouting and player development operation.
Amsler has spent his career evaluating players at virtually every level of the professional pathway.
Lakers Reshape Their Front Office
The Lakers entered the offseason intending to expand the basketball operation around Pelinka.
Los Angeles planned to hire two assistant general managers with different areas of emphasis.
Rohan Ramadas was brought in from the New Orleans Pelicans with a focus on strategy and data systems.
Amsler now adds the scouting and player personnel side of that equation.
Together, the two appointments give Pelinka additional senior voices with very different backgrounds.
Ramadas brings an analytics and strategy focus.
Amsler brings more than two decades of traditional scouting, personnel evaluation and player development experience.
Leaving Miami After 22 Years
For Miami, Amsler's departure ends one of the longest current tenures within the organisation's basketball department.
He joined the Heat when he was an intern and leaves having reached the position of vice president of player personnel.
During that period, Miami developed one of the NBA's strongest reputations for identifying and developing talent outside the obvious routes.
Amsler's time with the franchise also spanned all three of Miami's NBA championships.
He now takes that experience across the country to Los Angeles.
A Significant Addition Behind the Scenes
Front-office appointments rarely attract the attention of blockbuster trades or major free-agent signings.
But the people making those decisions can ultimately have just as much influence on a franchise's direction.
The Lakers wanted to strengthen their scouting, evaluation and development operation.
In Eric Amsler, they have hired someone who has spent more than two decades doing exactly that.
From basketball operations intern in Miami to assistant general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers.
It's been quite a climb.
