Porzingis puts his health first

Kristaps Porzingis is stepping away from basketball as ongoing health concerns continue to prevent him from returning to the court.

The 31-year-old centre has been absent throughout the opening weeks of the 2026–27 NBA season, with his physical condition and future in the league becoming increasingly uncertain.

Bleacher Report reported on 6 November that Porzingis had announced his decision to step away, explaining that he was not physically where he needed to be to perform at his expected level and was prioritising his health.

While the announcement raises serious questions about his playing future, it should not yet be treated as confirmation of permanent retirement.

A difficult start to the season

Porzingis missed Golden State's training camp and preseason preparations because of an undisclosed health-related matter.

On 14 October, the Warriors announced that he would remain sidelined indefinitely following discussions with team officials and medical staff.

The organisation subsequently confirmed that Porzingis would not be around the team for the immediate future.

Porzingis previously explained that he had been working with doctors and specialists to improve his health and expressed hope that he would eventually feel well enough to return.

However, no timetable for his return has been announced.

What this means for Golden State

Porzingis was expected to provide Golden State with an experienced frontcourt presence, combining outside shooting, interior scoring and rim protection.

His absence has forced the Warriors to adapt their rotation without the seven-foot-two Latvian.

has taken on significant responsibilities at centre, with and other frontcourt players helping provide additional coverage.

Golden State has nevertheless recovered from a difficult opening to the season, demonstrating that it can remain competitive despite the uncertainty surrounding Porzingis.

The longer-term question is whether the Warriors can maintain their frontcourt depth throughout the season without him.

Contract uncertainty adds another complication

Porzingis signed a two-year, $40 million agreement with Golden State during the offseason.

Reports published earlier this week indicated that the Warriors had begun withholding payments from his current salary because of his continued absence from team activities.

The organisation has also reportedly explored potential trades involving his contract.

These developments create uncertainty over both his future with Golden State and the team's roster planning.

However, the contractual situation should remain separate from speculation about his medical condition, the full details of which have not been publicly disclosed.

A career filled with talent and setbacks

Selected fourth overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, Porzingis established himself as one of the league's most distinctive big men.

His combination of height, shooting ability and shot-blocking helped earn him an NBA All-Star selection in 2018.

He later became an NBA champion with the Boston Celtics in 2024, contributing to the franchise's title-winning campaign.

Throughout his career, however, injuries and health problems have repeatedly interrupted his momentum.

At his best, Porzingis has been capable of changing games at both ends of the court, making the uncertainty surrounding his future particularly disappointing.

Is Kristaps Porzingis retiring?

There has been no confirmed permanent retirement announcement in the reporting available at publication.

Porzingis is stepping away while prioritising his health, and there is currently no confirmed timetable for a return to professional basketball.

Whether he eventually resumes his NBA career remains an open question.

For now, the priority is his wellbeing rather than predicting when, or whether, he will play again.
