Golden State Warriors center Kristaps Porzingis is out indefinitely because of an unspecified health issue and will miss the start of training camp.
Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. confirmed the news at Media Day on September 28, saying Porzingis will not travel with the team to Hawaii for training camp.
Dunleavy said Porzingis had been on the court and fully cleared last week before the Warriors were informed on Sunday that he was dealing with a health issue.
Golden State has not disclosed the nature of the issue and there is currently no timetable for Porzingis to return. Dunleavy said the team hopes to have him back soon but could not provide a more specific timeline.
The setback comes less than three months after Porzingis agreed to remain with Golden State on a two-year, $40 million contract.
This is exactly the sort of uncertainty Golden State hoped it would avoid entering the new season.
Porzingis isn't merely another member of the Warriors' rotation. His size, shooting and rim protection give Steve Kerr combinations that this roster otherwise struggles to reproduce.
That made his health one of the central variables in Golden State's 2026-27 plans.
The timing makes this development particularly jarring. According to Dunleavy, Porzingis was fully cleared and participating on court only last week. Days later, he is missing training camp with no timetable for his return.
There is an important line not to cross here.
Porzingis has dealt with health problems previously, but Golden State has not said this latest issue is connected to any previous condition. Until the Warriors or Porzingis provide further information, treating the two as connected would be speculation.
What we can assess is the basketball consequence.
Golden State entered the offseason needing considerably better health after a difficult 2025-26 campaign. Porzingis re-signing on a two-year deal was part of that calculation, with the Warriors effectively betting that a healthier season from their veteran center could materially change what this roster looks like around Stephen Curry.
Now training camp begins without him.
There is no reason yet to assume this becomes a lengthy regular-season absence. Dunleavy himself expressed hope that Porzingis could return relatively soon. But 'indefinitely' means the Warriors cannot currently plan around a known return date either.
For a veteran roster trying to squeeze as much as possible from the remaining Curry years, that's an uncomfortable way to begin camp.
LEAN EDGE VERDICT
The most important detail here is actually what we don't know.
Golden State hasn't identified the health issue and hasn't provided a return timetable. That makes speculation about either unnecessary.
But the basketball impact is already real.
The Warriors re-signed Porzingis because a healthy version of him can change their ceiling. Before training camp has even started, they're once again having to consider what the team looks like without him.
Hopefully 'indefinitely' proves considerably shorter than it sounds.
