Charlotte Hornets guard Kon Knueppel has suffered a left hamstring injury during offseason on-court activity and will miss the entire preseason.
Charlotte announced the injury on September 25, confirming that Knueppel will be re-evaluated during the first week of the regular season. No firm return date has been announced, leaving his availability for the Hornets' opening games uncertain.
Forward Grant Williams also suffered a right hamstring injury during offseason activity and will miss the preseason before being re-evaluated during the first week of the regular season.
For Charlotte, this is considerably more important than the words "preseason injury" might initially suggest.
Kon Knueppel isn't simply entering his second NBA season as another young player in the rotation. He's already becoming one of the central pieces of the Hornets' next era.
Knueppel averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists as a rookie while shooting 42.5% from three. He made 273 three-pointers, becoming the first rookie in NBA history to lead the league in total threes made.
That's why the timing matters.
Preseason would normally provide valuable minutes for Charlotte to establish combinations around its roster. Knueppel will now miss that entire process on the floor, while the Hornets wait to discover whether the injury extends into meaningful games.
There is also no reason to turn a re-evaluation date into a return date.
Charlotte has only said that Knueppel will be assessed again during the first week of the regular season. Until that examination takes place, anything more precise about his return would be speculation.
The priority should therefore be straightforward: don't allow an October hamstring problem to become a recurring issue across an 82-game season.
Charlotte has invested too much of its future in Knueppel for anything else.
LEAN EDGE VERDICT
The immediate loss is preseason preparation. The bigger concern is whether it becomes a regular-season absence.
Knueppel's rookie year changed his status remarkably quickly, from promising lottery pick to a player Charlotte can legitimately build around. That makes caution the sensible approach.
If the re-evaluation brings positive news, missing preseason will soon become a footnote.
If it doesn't, Charlotte could begin an important season without one of the players now expected to help define it.
