The Atlanta Hawks have waived guard Devin Carter, bringing his brief spell with the franchise to an end before he even reached training camp.
Atlanta acquired Carter and a 2033 second-round pick from the Sacramento Kings on June 29 in exchange for the draft rights to Alpha Kaba.
Carter, the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, was due approximately $5.16 million in guaranteed salary for the 2026-27 season. Atlanta will remain responsible for that salary if he clears waivers.
The 24-year-old averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 0.9 steals in 18.4 minutes across 38 appearances for Sacramento during the 2025-26 season.
Carter showed encouraging signs when given increased opportunities late in the campaign, but Atlanta's crowded roster left the Hawks needing to make moves ahead of the new season.
His time on the open market may not last long.
The Boston Celtics have reportedly shown interest in signing Carter once he clears waivers, giving the former Providence standout a potential opportunity to continue his NBA career in familiar territory.
For now, Carter must clear the waiver process before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
