Bradley Beal will miss the start of LA Clippers training camp after developing inflammation in his right knee.
Clippers interim president of basketball operations Trent Redden confirmed the injury update at Media Day, with Beal unable to begin camp alongside his teammates in Hawaii.
The encouraging news for Los Angeles is that Beal has recovered from the left hip surgery that ended his 2025-26 season after just six appearances. The right knee inflammation emerged during his return-to-play ramp-up.
Beal's availability for the Clippers' preseason opener against Golden State is uncertain, although there is currently no indication that his regular-season availability is in serious jeopardy.
The 33-year-old returned to Los Angeles this summer on a two-year, $13.2 million contract with a player option for the second season.
His absence adds another early injury concern for the Clippers, with Brandon Ingram already ruled out for the start of the regular season while recovering from surgery that addressed a right heel injury and partially torn Achilles tendon.
For Bradley Beal, the important distinction is that this isn't being presented as a setback to the hip that ended his season.
Beal has recovered from that surgery. The problem now is inflammation in his right knee that appeared while he was ramping back up.
That's enough to keep him out of the beginning of training camp, but there is currently no indication that the Clippers expect another lengthy absence.
Given Beal's last season, however, Los Angeles will have little incentive to rush the process.
He managed only six games before the hip injury ended his year, and the Clippers brought him back this summer knowing that availability would be one of the biggest questions surrounding him.
The timing also isn't ideal for the wider roster.
Brandon Ingram is already unavailable and has no firm return date following heel and Achilles surgery. Starting camp without Beal as well means the Clippers are immediately having to work around two significant absences.
That doesn't make Beal's knee inflammation a crisis. It does make his progress through camp something worth watching closely.
LEAN EDGE VERDICT
This looks more like a precautionary interruption than another major Bradley Beal injury at this stage.
His surgically repaired hip has recovered, and the Clippers have not suggested the knee inflammation threatens the beginning of his regular season.
But after Beal played only six games last year, simply getting through a healthy training camp would have been valuable.
Instead, the Clippers begin without him and without Brandon Ingram. For a team trying to establish a very different rotation, that's an awkward opening to camp.
