The Houston Rockets have made another major commitment to their future.
Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with Houston, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.
The new deal also includes a 10% trade kicker and ensures one of the NBA's most exciting young two-way players remains at the heart of Houston's plans.
Thompson was eligible for an extension after completing the third season of his NBA career and had been widely expected to secure a lucrative new contract this offseason.
Houston has now got the deal done.
Houston Locks Down a Cornerstone
The Rockets selected Thompson with the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.
Three seasons later, his position within the organisation looks very different.
Thompson has developed from an intriguing athletic prospect into one of Houston's most important players, establishing himself as a versatile defender, rebounder, playmaker and increasingly productive scorer.
His development continued during the 2025-26 season.
Thompson averaged 18.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.5 steals per game, starting all 79 games he played.
He also shot 53.4% from the field while averaging 37.4 minutes per game.
The points, assists and minutes were all career highs.
Why $208 Million Is Interesting
The size of Thompson's extension is substantial.
Five years and $208 million works out at an average value of approximately $41.6 million per season, although the actual salary will vary across the life of the contract.
But the figure is also interesting because Thompson potentially could have commanded considerably more.
Earlier projections placed a full five-year maximum extension at approximately $251 million.
There had already been indications, however, that Houston might attempt to negotiate below that figure.
The Rockets have now secured Thompson for significantly less than the projected maximum while still handing him one of the biggest contracts of the 2023 draft class.
Rockets Continue Their Contract Strategy
Thompson's agreement fits a pattern in Houston.
Rather than automatically handing every member of its young core a maximum contract, the Rockets have worked to secure important players on long-term deals while preserving as much financial flexibility as possible.
Alperen Şengün previously agreed to a five-year extension rather than a full maximum contract.
Jabari Smith Jr. followed with his own long-term agreement, while Tari Eason has also committed his future to Houston.
Now Thompson joins them.
For the Rockets, retaining that core while managing an increasingly expensive roster could become crucial as they attempt to build a sustainable contender.
The Next Step for Amen
Thompson's development has been rapid, but there remains one obvious area of his game that could determine just how high his ceiling eventually becomes.
Three-point shooting.
Thompson shot just 21.6% from beyond the arc last season and is a career 21.9% three-point shooter through his first three NBA seasons.
Yet he has already become an extremely productive player without a reliable outside shot.
His combination of size, athleticism, defense, rebounding and ability to attack the basket makes him unusually versatile.
If the shooting ever catches up with the rest of his game, Houston could have something considerably more valuable than simply a very good starter.
They could have a genuine franchise player.
Houston's Future Is Taking Shape
The Rockets have spent several years assembling one of the league's most intriguing collections of young talent.
Thompson is increasingly emerging as one of its centrepieces.
Houston didn't draft him fourth overall simply hoping he would become a useful rotation player.
The $208 million commitment makes clear how highly the franchise now values him.
The Rockets have secured Thompson through the next stage of his career.
What happens during those five years could determine just how far this Houston team can go.
